Its been twenty years since the global phenomenon called Harry Potter’s magical journey started. The release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, on 26 June 1997, passed practically unnoticed. But it has sold over 450 million copies worldwide in 79 languages, inspired a major movie franchise, a spellbinding theatre production and captivated readers of all ages for twenty years.

The work was an international hit and Rowling wrote six more books in the series, which sold hundreds of millions of copies and was adapted into a blockbuster film franchise.Rowling’s brilliant decision was to have her characters grow up at the same rate as her readers. Each book was set in one school year, and grew longer, darker and more adult in theme.

Harry Potter series was started in such a time where children had lost the desire to read with the popularity of visual media in its many forms. Then Rowling waved her magic wand.Children were suddenly descending to book stores en masse, libraries had waiting lists for Potter books and kids begged to stay up late to finish just one more chapter.
