US State Department today released The List of Countries Providing Shelter to Terrorists, in its Annual Country Report on Terrorism.
In its report the state department stated that terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) continue to operate from Pakistan in 2016 and getting funding in the country. And there are no firm actions against them by Government of Pakistan. It also said, ‘Although LeT is banned in Pakistan, LeT’s wings Jamaat- ud-Dawa (JuD) and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FiF) were able to openly engage in fundraising, including in the capital’.
“Pakistan did not take substantial action against the Afghan Taliban or Haqqani, or substantially limit their ability to threaten US interests in Afghanistan, although Pakistan supported efforts to bring both groups into an Afghan-led peace process” the state department said .
Terrorist groups like The Haqqani Network (HQN), the LeT and JeM continued to operate from Pakistan in 2016, The State Department Reported.
“The continued development of al Qaeda affiliate in the region, AQIS, highlights the dynamic nature of the region’s terrorist and militant landscape, posing risks to the mission and to US interests,” The State Department Reported to Congress.
The state Department also mentioned Pakistan’s Terrorist groups Cross Boarder terrorist attacks in India .
‘In January, India experienced a terrorist attack against an Indian military facility in Pathankot, Punjab, which was blamed by authorities on JeM. Over the course of 2016, the Government of India sought to deepen counter-terrorism cooperation and information sharing with the United States’ , The state department said.
The state Department said India and US will continue cooperate with each other against terrorist threats from groups like al-Qaeda, ISIS, JeM, LeT and D-Company (Dawood Ibrahim’s Extremist Group ), including through greater collaboration on designations at the UN
Other Countries reported as safe havens are Afghanistan, Somalia, the Trans-Sahara, Sulu/Sulawesi Seas Littoral, Southern Philippines, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen, Columbia and Venezuela.
